One Nurse Is Special To Many!
Honor Someone Special has received nominations for more than 1,500 oncology nurses since the program began in April 2009. Nurses have been described as caring, compassionate, knowledgeable, comforting, and hard-working and have been nominated by colleagues, patients, and friends.
Of all the nominations received for Honor Someone Special, no one has been named more than Mary Diffendall, RN, OCN®. Mary, an oncology nurse at Connecticut Oncology Group in Middletown, has been nominated for Honor Someone Special 26 times, often by her patients. Here is what is being said about Mary.
“Mary always encouraged me during my chemo, explaining what to expect, making sure that I was comfortable, both physically and mentally. She could lighten my spirit yet still remain understanding. Mary was the difference in my attitude toward my treatments. She saw me as a person, not just a patient.” –Margaret
“Mary has a very warm personality. She is very efficient in caring for you and is very hands on when needed. Mary is easy to talk to which I find to be a very important quality. She is comforting and pleasant to be around.” –Eileen
“Mary has made a very difficult and uncomfortable experience pleasant and relaxing. She knows how to inflict a sense of well being and safe harbor in an otherwise scary environment.” –Dana
“When I had my first bout with breast cancer ten years ago, I met my smiling, pleasant oncology nurse, Mary Diffendall. We became friends immediately. During six months of chemo, I never had to have a port. Mary would place my hand in warm water to get my tiny veins working. Having a caring, knowledgeable oncology team, which includes Mary, has definitely helped me maintain a positive attitude as I continue to fight breast cancer.” –Phyllis
“Mary has been an oncology nurse for more than twenty years now, and for good reason. She is one of the finest clinicians I have ever worked with. She is a wonderful patient advocate and will always stay late or do whatever it takes to arrange her patient's care in the office and at home. Mary is a dependable resource with a wealth of knowledge and dedication. Please help us recognize her contributions to our profession by honoring her.” –Stephen Harper, RN
Mary is one of many notable oncology nurses throughout the country and the world. Why not take a minute to nominate a colleague? Or, give the information to patients so they can nominate a nurse who has made a difference for them. Nominees will receive a thank-you card from Honor Someone Special for the important and life-changing work they do every day.
